Global conventional oil production

Conventional oil production of 69 mb/d represents by far the largest share of global oil output of 85 mb/d. In addition, 6.5 mb/d come from liquids production from the US shale plays, and the rest is made up of other natural gas liquids and unconventional oil sources such as oil sands and heavy oil. The World Crude Oil Production measures the number of barrels of crude oil that are produced per day in the world. Production has steadily increased over time, except in the 80s when production was lessened worldwide. This metric has been indicative to crude oil spot prices.

That limit was breached in December 2014 with a new high of 74.28 Mbpd (Figure 1, blue area is conventional C+C). This comes on the back of a prolonged period of record high oil price.

As an example, in 2017 global crude oil + condensate production (typically used to define oil-this does not include natural gas liquids, biofuels, or other hydrocarbon liquids) was about 30 billion barrels. Cumulative world oil production at the end of 2017 was approximately 1.36 trillion barrels (1,360 billion barrels).

The big question is when production of LTO in the US will peak. Within the US, the Permian Basin in Texas will likely turn the tide. As of 2006 that region had already produced up to 32 billion barrels (Gb) of conventional oil; then, from 2007 to 2017, an additional 5.5 Gb of conventional and unconventional oil were extracted. Conventional oil tends to be less expensive and complex to extract than unconventional oil due to the routine nature of the production techniques. This oil is also the most valuable in global markets because it requires the smallest amount of processing prior to refining to create value-added products.
