I've been looking at the job openings listed on a bunch of prop shops/quant focused hedge funds, and it seems like there's a ton of nonstandardized job titles/descriptions that make things confusing. At some there will only be quant researchers, at others there will be roles for researchers and traders. Quant researcher will be more more math and academia heavy, while the trader will need more practical experience. ML will be more geared towards Quant researcher. For pay it depends. At a hedge fund your pay will reflect how well you perform so either could make more. Though at some places traders are slightly more 'senior'.
